Purpose of Position
The Head Boys Cross Country Coach will oversee the entire Memorial HS Boys Cross Country Program and instruct the varsity high school boys cross country team. The Head Coach is responsible for helping each student-athlete gain success by reaching their full potential in the classroom and on the field.

Supervisory Responsibilities- Supervise the Boys Cross Country program coaching staff, including all assistants.
- Competitive experience in cross country at the high school level.
- Previous successful cross country coaching experience with a preference for coaches with prior successful experience as a varsity head cross country coach.
- Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of contemporary high school and college cross‑country training systems.
- Commitment to year‑round personnel skill enhancement, strength training, and program improvement.
- Successful experience providing positive motivation and development of student‑athletes, including year‑round monitoring of their conduct, behavior, and academic performance.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain open, positive communication with coaching staff, student‑athletes, parents, and appropriate sub‑varsity and youth program coaches.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional progressions of cross‑country training techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze tendencies and to design responsive strategies for peak performance.
- Current certification in first aid with preference for coursework in sports‑medicine, injury prevention, and/or rehabilitation, and cooperation with team or family physicians.
- Current certification, or must obtain within one month of employment, CPR/AED certification from a national certifying organization.
- Successful experience in athletic budgeting, supplemental fundraising, and long‑range planning for enhancement and maintenance of equipment and uniform inventories.
- Successful experience in leading an integrated high school cross‑country program that encompasses all levels of competition within the program.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and coach diverse populations.
- Knowledge of WIAA eligibility standards and prior experience reinforcing good sportsmanship and compliance with athletic codes among team members and the cross‑country coaching staff.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate cross‑country into a student‑athlete’s total school experience.
- Ability to integrate the student‑athlete’s experience in cross‑country into the overall mission of Madison Memorial High School and its Athletic Department.
- If no teaching license, successful completion of an approved coach’s education course (e.g. NFHS or ASEP) or the ability to complete the course prior to the second season of coaching.
- Valid teaching license.
- College cross‑country experience.
- College coaching experience.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully implement a cross‑country program in a high school setting.
- WIAA 2026 Fall Sports Season with optional work responsibilities in Spring of 2026.
- In season:
Monday‑Friday 4:00 – 6:00 PM (sometimes longer on meet days);
Saturday 8:00 – 10:00 am (sometimes longer on meet days). Off‑season: 25 hours a month.
- Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.
- Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.
- Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off‑site meetings.
