About Scope3
Scope3 is the industry’s leading collaborative sustainability platform. By modeling the complex digital advertising supply chain, we help brands measure and dramatically reduce digital waste to reduce carbon emissions from advertising and increase the efficacy of advertising investment. This is an exceptional opportunity to build a company alongside great people and make a difference in one of the most important issues facing the planet: the climate crisis.
We’re a venture backed company of 100+ folks distributed across the globe. We are fortunate to be led by an experienced leadership team, many of whom designed and engineered the digital advertising landscape as we know it today. The company secured $20M in Series B funding led by GV in Oct 2023 (additional investors include Venrock, Rucker Park, Room
40 Ventures, and Craft Ventures), and we are thrilled to be the recipient of an additional round of $25M in Oct 2024 . Scope3 has significant market traction with more than 150+ customers and is experiencing accelerated growth.
Scope3 is a fully remote company and largely asynchronous to provide flexible working hours and to operate globally, with concentrations in New York and Europe. At this time, we are hiring in Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, and the United States.
About the RoleWe're seeking an Engineering Manager for our Real-Time Data Systems team who codes. Not someone who used to write backend systems, but someone who still ships production code and maintains the technical depth to make sound architectural decisions about data pipelines at scale.
You’ll lead a team of 5-7 backend engineers (growing over time) responsible for ingesting, processing, and delivering real-time advertising data at massive scale. This includes building ML and LLM pipelines that power our AI-driven sustainability insights, maintaining high-throughput data systems, and ensuring our infrastructure scales reliably as we grow. Your team's work directly enables Scope3’s ability to model the digital advertising supply chain and deliver real-time carbon emission measurements to our customers.
Roughly half your time writing code—building features in data pipelines, optimizing performance bottlenecks, reviewing system architecture, addressing production issues. The other half on leadership: developing your engineers through 1-on-1s, hiring, sprint planning, collaborating cross-functionally, and making architectural decisions that keep systems scalable and maintainable.
Responsibilities- Lead and mentor a team of 5-7 backend engineers, fostering their technical growth and career development
- Write production Go code regularly—you're a working member of the team, not just directing traffic
- Design and oversee architecture of real-time data pipelines processing billions of advertising events
- Build and maintain ML and LLM pipelines that power AI-driven sustainability analytics
- Make architectural decisions that balance performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost
- Drive initiatives to improve system reliability, observability, and operational excellence
- Collaborate with data science, product, and infrastructure teams to deliver customer value
- Manage hiring, onboarding, and team growth as we scale
- Own capacity planning and resource allocation for the team
- Establish best practices for code quality, testing, and system design in high-throughput environments
- 7+ years of backend engineering experience building and scaling large data systems
- 2+ years managing or leading engineering teams while maintaining hands-on technical contributions
- You still code regularly and have no plans to stop —this role requires equal parts coding and leadership
- Strong proficiency in Golang with experience building production systems at scale
- Proven experience building ML and LLM pipelines in production environments
- Deep understanding of real-time data processing, stream processing, and event-driven architectures
- Track record designing systems that handle high throughput while maintaining reliability and low latency
- Experience with data pipeline orchestration, monitoring, and debugging at scale
- Strong focus on system maintainability,…
