Software Engineer II, Backend; Infrastructure

As part of the Cost Engineering Team, you will drive financial visibility, cost efficiency, and long-term economic sustainability across our cloud infrastructure. You’ll blend engineering, data analysis, and financial insight to ensure each technical decision maintains availability while preserving cost efficiency.

• Break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery.
• Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design and analytics, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that properly consider risks and trade-offs.
• Support the operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” and on‑call efforts.
• Contribute to a sense of community by engaging in growth and development activities such as participation in the interview process.

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Experience designing, developing and launching backend systems with proficiency in either Python or Kotlin.
• Familiarity with the building blocks of distributed systems and technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience building cost visibility via tagging.
• Experience creating cost savings opportunities via cost analysis.
• Ability to translate a simple problem or business scenario into a solution that interacts with multiple software components, writing clear, well‑tested, extensible code.
• Comfortable navigating a large codebase, debugging others’ code, and providing feedback via code reviews.
• Demonstrated ownership of growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills supporting effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Pay Grade – L

Equity Grade – 6

Employees new to Affirms typically start at the beginning of the pay range. Pay is based on location, experience, and job-related skills.

Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits (including 100 % subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents).

USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) per year: $160,000 – $210,000

USA base pay range (all other U.S. states) per year: $142,000 – $192,000
