Engineering Manager - App Stores

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors.

The company is founder‑led, profitable, and growing. This technical management role leads a team that develops Python and Golang micro‑services powering our global software distribution engine—our Snap Store and Charmhub.io marketplaces. The system supports software distribution concepts such as architectures, releases, betas, release candidates, stable releases, and branches. You will help transform the experience people have with open‑source software by expanding the range of software we can deliver.

This is an opportunity to engineer a highly scalable SaaS product and learn from Canonical's world‑class security team as we deliver this capability safely to customers worldwide.

As an Engineering Manager, you must be technically strong and primarily responsible for running an effective team and developing colleagues. You will develop and review code, ensure the team is productive, remove blockers, and foster growth. You will also positively influence culture, facilitate technical delivery, regularly reflect with your team on strategy, and collaborate with other Engineering Managers, product managers, and architects to produce an ambitious engineering roadmap.

We expect Engineering Managers to be fluent in the programming language, architecture, and components their team uses. Code reviews and architectural leadership are part of the job. The commitment to healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality, and performance optimisation is as important as fair and clear management and ensuring a high‑performing team.

Location:

This role may be based remotely in Americas, Europe, Middle East or Africa time zones.

What your day will look like
  • Lead a remote team of engineers in your time zone
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands‑on career development
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, management, and external stakeholders
  • Be an active part of the leadership team and collaborate with other leaders in the organisation
  • Build clean web service APIs to support both CLI and web frontend clients, using Python (and optionally Golang)
  • Engage with many other teams at Canonical, the open‑source community and commercial partners
What we are looking for in you
  • Good experience leading modern, agile software development practices
  • Experience forming a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
  • Demonstrative experience of being a role model for sound engineering principles and directly contributing to your team's goals
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
  • Love to mentor, develop and grow people, with a track record of doing so
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software development
  • Focused on success and the timely delivery of high‑quality software
  • Value and nurture great team culture and spirit
  • Experience and commitment to agile development methodologies
  • Software development experience in Python (experience in Golang is a plus)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Practical experience with Linux system administration
What we offer you

Your base pay will depend on your geographical location, level of experience, and skills. Certain roles may also be eligible for additional benefits and rewards including annual bonuses and sales incentives based on revenue or utilisation. Our compensation philosophy is to ensure equity across our global workforce.

In addition to competitive base pay, we provide all team members with additional benefits reflecting our values: fully remote working, personal learning and development budget, annual compensation review, recognition rewards, annual holiday leave, parental leave, employee assistance programme, opportunity to travel to new locations for sprints, and Priority Pass for travel upgrades.

Canonical is an equal opportunity employer. We are proud to foster a workplace free from discrimination. Diversity of experience, perspectives, and background creates a better work environment and better products. Whatever your identity, you will receive fair consideration for your application.
