Position: Qualified Social Worker (Assessment - Children)

Overview

Pembrokeshire County Council's Children's Services directorate provides statutory support to children and families under the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. The Child Care Assessment Team (CCAT) undertakes child protection work, assessments, court proceedings, and support for Young People Looked After. The service is committed to safeguarding, early intervention, and delivering high-quality outcomes for children across Pembrokeshire.

The Role

The Assessment Social Worker will carry out statutory assessments, child protection investigations, and manage a varied caseload including higher-end Child in Need cases, S.47 enquiries, exploitation concerns, and court work. You will be part of the daily S.47 Joint Investigation rota, working closely with partner agencies to ensure timely and robust safeguarding responses.

This role is office-based due to rota requirements, with opportunities to work from home when writing assessments. You will be supported by a strong management structure and have access to professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake assessments within statutory timescales in line with the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.
  • Complete S.47 child protection investigations and participate in the daily JI rota.
  • Manage a caseload including Child Protection, Young People Looked After, Court, and family support work.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, statements, and assessments for court and multi-agency meetings.
  • Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns, including exploitation risks.
  • Work collaboratively with families, partner agencies, and internal teams to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with statutory guidance and local policy.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Qualified Social Worker with registration.
  • Strong experience in statutory children's social care.
  • Skilled in assessment, risk management, and safeguarding practice.
  • Experience of court work, report writing, and managing complex caseloads.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet statutory deadlines, and prioritise effectively.
  • Strong communication, analytical and partnership-working skills.
