Position: Child Development/Early Childhood Education Associate (Part-time) Instructor Pool 2021 - 2022

Position Information

This is a professional position in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Services Unit providing coverage for full-time counselors during off hours. The employee will be responsible for the safety and supervision of adolescent male residents in a court operated, community-based group home and for the operation of the group home during scheduled shifts. The program serves an economically and ethnically diverse group of 13 to 18 year old males.

Fifty to sixty percent of the residents speak Spanish, and some have limited English speaking skills.

Specific duties include: working with delinquent youths, some of whom may be socially and emotionally maladjusted and/or learning disabled; implementing daily program activities according to the group home schedule; leading structured activities; conducting group meetings; administering medications; and supervising meals and chores. The employee drives clients to recreational events in the community using a 15-passenger van and must maintain yearly certifications (CPR, First Aid, Handle with Care, medication administration, food handler, and tuberculosis screening).

The employee will also conduct pat down searches of residents and urine drug screenings.

Relief Counselors are expected to respond quickly to requests for coverage and work on holidays and overnight shifts. All employees provide thorough documentation of the shift in a house log which must be done within regulations and guidelines set by the Department of Juvenile Justice and by the Arlington Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. General supervision is received from the Group Home Manager and the Juvenile Program Coordinator.

  • Minimum:
    High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience providing direct human services to adolescents in a community-based setting.
  • Substitution:
    College coursework in a human services related field may substitute for up to one year of experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Desirable:
    Preference may be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
  • current certification in First Aid/CPR, Handle with Care, and as a Virginia Medication Aide;
  • experience using the Positive Peer Culture behavior modification approach;
  • oral proficiency in Spanish and English, and/or
  • experience in group counseling, substance abuse treatment, or juvenile probation in the criminal justice field.
Special Requirements

A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. You will be required to provide police clearance records upon final consideration for employment.

Selectee must receive clearance by the Virginia Department of Social Services Child Protective Services Central Registry.

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Work Hours:

Selectee is required to be on-call as needed (including holidays, weekends, evenings, overnights) for a facility that is in operation twenty-four hours a day.
