Overview
Social Worker I.
Salary: $24.71 per hour / $4,283.07 per month / $51,396.80 per year.
Responsibilities- Performs basic social services casework; identifies client needs for more intensive casework services and provides referrals; carries a caseload of moderately difficult cases; manages a caseload of increasingly difficult cases; and performs other related work as assigned.
- Under close supervision, learns casework methods, procedures, policies and carries a limited non-complex social services caseload; participates in in-service training; advances to greater independence as skill and knowledge grow.
- Conducts interviews with clients, family members, and others to assess basic social, physical, and mental needs and obtain health information to identify and provide social services.
- Develops and carries out treatment plans appropriate to an assigned caseload; refers clients to other staff or community resources for direct and intensive services; advocates for clients to obtain appropriate services.
- Maintains case records, communicates decisions and case plans to clients, families and service providers; may testify in court; performs related duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
- Pattern 1:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. - Pattern 2:
Successful completion of 30 college semester units or 45 quarter units, including 15 semester units or 22.5 quarter units in social welfare, social/human services, sociology, or other social or behavioral science; and one year of full-time experience in a related Social Services role OR three years of full-time experience providing direct client services to disadvantaged populations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of social work principles, time management, interviewing and problem-solving methods.
- Ability to organize work, maintain confidential records, communicate effectively, and develop appropriate responses to complex cases.
- Ability to work with diverse clients and maintain professional relationships; handle emotionally charged situations; operate standard computer software; and respect cultural differences.

- Some positions may offer remote work arrangements with department approval; flexible schedules may be available.
Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: conduct client interviews, assess safety, prepare case plans, maintain records, testify in court, and participate in staff development. Duties are at entry/trainee level for Social Worker I.
Examination InformationTraining & Experience Examination – Weighted 100%. A minimum score of 70% is required on the examination for eligibility. Retest not permitted within six months of the eligibility date. The eligible list is established for 12 months.
