The City of Roanoke is seeking a Youth and Young Adult Mentor for the RESET (Rapid Engagement of Support in the Event of Trauma) group. The RESET Youth and Young Adult Mentor will assist in the coordination of activities and programs for at-risk youth and young adults. The RESET Youth and Young Adult Mentor will provide structured mentoring and individualized academic and social/behavioral support to a defined caseload of youth within a multi-tiered system of support.
The RESET Youth and Young Adult Mentor will work collaboratively with youth, families, school personnel, and community agencies to provide interventions designed to improve engagement with school and the community. The RESET Youth and Young Adult Mentor may also provide service and monitor compliance for youth involved with the courts.

The RESET Youth and Young Adult Mentor is a part-time hourly position reporting directly to the RESET Coordinator and provides no direct supervision to other staff. This position is a Grant Funded position and works no more than twenty (20) hours per week.
Essential Functions- Provides coaching, problem-solving support, and individualized skill-building interventions to youth.
- Systematically monitors school attendance and behavior; documents youth engagement in the school and community.
- Facilitates youth access to active participation in school/community-related activities and events.
- Communicates regularly with program supervisor, school personnel, and community partnerships.
- Conducts home/work/school visits with youth and families to establish relationships built on open communication and trust.
- Prepares written reports and documentation as required and needed.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all juvenile information.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Position qualifications:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of 2 years of professional experience working with adolescents, or an equivalent combination of training and related experience may substitute for the professional experience. Associate’s degree preferred.
- Must possess a valid State of Virginia driver’s license.
- Must be able to maintain acceptably clear background checks through Child Protective Services, FBI, and State NCIC and drug screening.
- Must maintain a minimum of liability insurance on personal vehicle, as required by the State of Virginia.
- Must be able to drive for long periods.
- Must be able to work beyond normal work schedule - including nights, weekends, and holidays.
