NAMI Northern Nevada, operating since 1989 in Washoe County, Nevada, has grown from a support group to a robust organization dedicated to providing NAMI's signature programs and mission imperatives of support, advocacy, and education. We offer educational programs such as Peer-to-Peer, Family-to-Family, NAMI Basics, and NAMI Homefront in both English and Spanish, addressing the needs of those with mental illnesses, their families, and caregivers.
Our support groups, such as NAMI Connection and the Family Support Group, address everyday issues and crises. We actively participate in mental health coalitions, treatment centers, and legislative advocacy, and strive to serve diverse communities including Latino, African American, American Indian, LGBTQ, and homeless populations.
This full time role of Forensic Peer Program Coordinator is a hybrid position based in Reno, NV, with some work from home acceptable. The Forensic Peer Program Coordinator will work with the team to,
- Maintain and establish relationships with partnering agencies.
- Develop and implement deflection and diversion peer programs across Washoe County
- Engage with individuals who have mental health challenges and are involved in the criminal justice system.
- Provide peer support, guidance, and advocacy, facilitate support groups and 1:1 peer support both in-person and virtually for ages 12-17, 18-25, and 25+
- Assist clients with developing coping strategies and accessing community resources. Additionally, the specialist will collaborate with law enforcement, legal professionals, and mental health service providers to ensure comprehensive support for clients.
- Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly reporting for federal grant requirements and internal CMIS client logs
- Work with Dropbox, Microsoft Suite, and Google Workspace
- Access to company peer phone line (as applicable)
- Some driving required to join weekly team meetings (in-person), community outreach events, speciality court appearances, and WCSO weekly program offerings.
- Experience in peer support and mental health services
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and advocacy skills
- Familiarity with the criminal justice system and mental health resources
- Knowledge of Washoe County resources and adult and juvenile criminal justice system and crisis intervention.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Must pass a background check that enables you to enter the Washoe County Sheriffs Office, Reno Police Department, and Sparks Police Department.
- Strong interpersonal and transparent communication
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are beneficial
- Understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to the needs of marginalized communities
- Relevant certifications or training in peer support or mental health services is a plus
