MSW Social Worker – Housing Advocacy Practice

Bronx Legal Services (BLS) is part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), dedicated to fighting poverty and advancing racial, social, and economic justice for low‑income New Yorkers. BLS provides high‑quality legal representation, primarily to help tenants in the Bronx preserve affordable housing and achieve housing stability.

With more than 600 staff across neighborhood offices and outreach sites, BLS represents hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers a year. The organization partners with community groups, elected officials, public agencies, pro‑bono lawyers, and the courts to maximize effectiveness, fight discrimination, and promote equity.

Responsibilities
  • Provide case management support to individuals and families at risk of eviction and displacement.
  • Conduct regular home visits, with client consent, to assess housing conditions and provide case management assistance.
  • Accompany clients in‑field, upon consent, to assist with advocacy and accessibility needs.
  • Administer psychosocial assessments for individuals with mental health, substance use, and trauma‑related concerns.
  • Draft supportive affidavits, appear in court, and testify on behalf of clients regarding psychosocial assessments.
  • Offer crisis intervention and referrals to culturally appropriate services for immediate client needs.
  • Identify and establish relationships with social, medical, and other services required to assist clients.
  • Advocate for clients to access public benefits, social services, and medical care, among other systems impacting clients.
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team (preferred).
Qualifications
  • Master of Social Work degree;
    New York State license preferred (will be required as soon as feasible upon hire).
  • 1–2 years of post‑graduate experience working with individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, and trauma‑related conditions.
  • Experience working with clients in community settings and in their homes.
  • Demonstrated passion for social justice and a commitment to low‑income and communities of color.
  • SIFI certification preferred.
  • Experience providing case management to vulnerable populations.
  • Familiarity with New York City social service systems.
  • Experience providing client advocacy related to housing and homelessness.
  • Knowledge of available housing resources and vouchers through social services.
  • Experience providing short‑term counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Experience conducting psychosocial assessments.
  • Outstanding organizational, planning, and time‑management skills.
  • Excellent communication, research, and writing skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language spoken in the communities served (preferred).

This is a hybrid in‑office/remote position with 50% onsite and/or field work. The role is a union position, and clinical supervision toward the C credential is provided and guaranteed as per union contract.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range is $70,512 – $145,980 USD, determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and based on years of post‑MSW social work experience.
