The Birth Parent Caseworker provides professional social services to expectant and birth parents considering adoption. This role is vital in ensuring children are placed in safe, loving, and permanent families. Through compassionate, holistic support, the caseworker guides and advocates for birth parents throughout the adoption process—from initial engagement through post-placement.
JOB DUTIES AND
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide emotional and practical support to expectant and birth parents, with a holistic, client-centered approach focused on both the parent and child’s well-being.
- Collect comprehensive background information, assess individual needs, and develop customized case management plans.
- Facilitate communication and coordination between birth parents and prospective adoptive families, ensuring all parties feel informed, supported, and respected.
- Assist in the matching, placement, and post-placement supervision of children in adoptive homes, maintaining sensitivity to the emotional complexities involved.
- Complete and document home studies and post-placement reports in accordance with agency, state, and federal requirements.
- Identify and utilize agency, state, federal, and community resources to support birth parents and adoptive families.
- Locate and coordinate local resources for clients, even when working across diverse geographic locations.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in client case files and case management systems, including contact notes, time spent, and service activities.
- Close adoption files and ensure the sealing of records in accordance with legal and agency guidelines.
- Serve as a flexible problem-solver, adapting to changing needs and circumstances, including working evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Perform other duties and special projects assigned to support organizational objectives and enhance operational efficiency.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 2 years of experience with case management, child welfare, or adoption services.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint and Excel;
Microsoft Teams - Valid/current driver’s license. Must be able to drive at night.
- Strong knowledge of adoption practices, trauma-informed care, and family dynamics.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
- Comfortable working independently, managing complex cases, and exercising sound judgment.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, or a related human services field.
- Experience in client assessment, case management, and/or adoption counseling.
- Bilingual in Spanish (spoken and written).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Combination of office, home-based, and community settings.
- Frequent travel and fieldwork, including visits to client homes, hospitals, and community resource centers. Travel may account for up to 50% of working time.
- Flexible hours required, including occasional evenings and weekends to meet the needs of clients.
- Emotionally demanding work requiring strong boundaries and self-care awareness.
- Operate primarily in a climate-controlled office environment with a fast-paced workflow, requiring the ability to shift between tasks, manage frequent interruptions, and meet time-sensitive deadlines efficiently.
- Regular, punctual attendance is essential for maintaining efficient service delivery.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods during home visits, community outreach, and office work.
- Must be able to drive for prolonged periods, including frequent local and occasional regional travel.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds (e.g., files, training materials, or equipment).
- Must be able to enter a variety of home and hospital environments, which may include stairs, limited accessibility, or varying conditions.
- Frequent use of computer, phone, and other office equipment for case documentation and communication.
- May experience emotionally challenging situations requiring mental and emotional resilience.
