What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Year‑Round Safeguards & Security Performance Assurance Intern to join our dynamic team! On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Participate in the development and management of performance metrics for the Performance Assurance Team.
- Participate in data analysis for the Self‑Assessments, Performance Testing, and Corrective Action Management Teams.
- Collaborate with all levels of internal and external personnel and network with others in the industry to build and promote a collaborative working environment.
- Develop tools and recommend new systems, processes, training, and other initiatives to continuously improve the program and find innovative ways of evaluating compliance and performance.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary RangeAt Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Our interns earn competitive pay rates based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require- Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Note:
If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
- Business Administration (Management of Information Systems Major) or Social Science (Criminology/Sociology/National Security/Global Security), or related field.
- Career interests in Safeguards and Security at a national laboratory.
- Coachable with a strong willingness to learn and grow professional skills.
- Ability to exercise agility, humility, and accountability.
- Ability to work in a team‑focused environment, exercise discretion, and maintain confidentiality of information.
- Ability to exercise initiative and execute on multiple concurrent activities to meet a variety of customer requirements with changing priorities and short deadlines.
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills (strategic and tactical) to synthesize disparate detailed data into useful information, such as developing coherent documentation for reports and presentations.
- Ability to effectively communicate with co‑workers, staff, and leadership.
- Experience with Microsoft Suite (SharePoint, Forms, Excel, Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI, Teams, and Outlook).
- Problem‑solving skills.

The S&S Performance Assurance Department is a team of professionals responsible for Self‑Assessments, Performance Assurance, and Corrective Actions Management. They evaluate the health of security programs at SNL/NM, SNL/CA, SNL Remote Sites, and subcontractor facilities, providing leadership with objective information for informed decision‑making about program health and risk acceptance.
