The post is part of a rota system that includes weekends and bank holidays, shifts are rotated weekly typically working early mornings or late evenings. The Security Officer will assist the Library of Birmingham in providing a service to the public, staff, and visitors at the Library of Birmingham operating 24/7.

As a Security Officer You Will
  • Monitor life safety systems
  • Operate the Fire Evacuation lift in emergency
  • Enforce the Libraries and Museums Act 1964 byelaws
  • Follow the libraries policy and procedures and those of the Council
  • Work in the Control Room operating CCTV systems, operating the Fire and Intruder Alarm software systems, Lift Control systems and other software
  • Be computer literate and able to enter data into the computer and write reports
  • Have awareness of counter terrorism issues and mitigation measures and be aware of the implications of the PROTECT duty (Martyn’s Law)
You Will Be Responsible For
  • Opening and closing of the building
  • Digitally recording incidents
  • Complete regular patrols
  • Monitor CCTV and work as a team to provide a safe environment for Library users
  • Performing dynamic risk assessment, using your problem‑solving skills to resolve issues that occur during daily operations and liaise with management accordingly

There is a requirement for Security officers to be trained first aiders and to hold the Security Industry Authority Licence. These certifications must be maintained throughout your employment with Birmingham City Council. A CCTV SIA licence is also desirable.
