Police Officer Special Information

  • This position is an on‑site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business to be authorized by submitting driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university‑owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose.

About

the Position

NAU Police Officers patrol campus to detect and deter criminal or suspicious activity. Officers investigate criminal activity, vehicle accidents, personal injuries and university administrative violations and write detailed reports describing such incidents/investigations. NAUPD provides professional, courteous, and effective service to all campus members, including students, faculty, staff, and guests. NAUPD investigates complaints and works to resolve conflicts both on campus and concerning the campus community.

Responsibilities

Include 30% - Enforcement of local, state, and federal laws
  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or by motorized vehicle to control traffic, prevent or deter crime and educate, cite and/or arrest violators; issues warnings or citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicle laws are observed; enforces Federal and State laws as well as university rules.
  • Constantly analyzes the job for improvements to, or modifications of, university law enforcement services and makes recommendations to department management.
30% - Response and Investigation of crimes, accidents, and incidents
  • Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service; makes decisions based on analysis of situation and facts.
  • Responds to public service calls such as delivering emergency messages, motorist assists, animal complaints, civil complaints, domestic disturbances.
  • Investigates reports of missing persons, identifies unsafe conditions or areas ripe for criminal activity; reports conditions and takes corrective actions.
  • Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performs follow‑up duties on crimes/accidents as directed by supervisor; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts; files appropriate reports as directed by federal, state, or local legal requirements.
20% - Administrative duties and training
  • Prepares detailed written reports of crimes, accidents, and incidents. Compiles daily reports on law enforcement activities for department management.
  • Serves warrants, subpoenas, or other court processes as necessary.
  • Appears in court to provide testimony on investigations.
  • Participates in ongoing and recurring trainings as required by the department and its accrediting agencies, the university, and the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training board.
  • Trains sworn and non‑sworn personnel on departmental policies, procedures, and activities.
15% - Department Representation
  • Works with the university residents/community and other outside public agencies to solve residential/university concerns.
  • Makes oral presentations to students, faculty, staff, and other citizen groups on crime prevention/public safety issues.
  • Maintains knowledge of, and answers questions about, campus law enforcement.
5% - Other
  • Other duties as assigned.
