Under the general supervision of the Captain of Services, serves as Booking Officer of the Holland Police Department responsible for the proper processing of prisoners and the handing of related paperwork, such as complaints, bonding, subpoenas, and warrants. Assigned to assist the property and evidence officer and assist with general clerical duties.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Receives from the arresting/transporting officer the arrest information and the prisoner to be jailed. Processes the prisoner, including obtaining arrest report information, charges and medical information, taking photographs, fingerprinting, and itemizing personal property. Houses prisoners in cells, makes required hourly inspections while on duty, and feeds prisoners when necessary. Supervises the cadets engaged in this inspection.
  • Take prisoners to District Court or operates the video for District Court appearances. Occasionally transports prisoners to Ottawa County Jail and to other facilities holding prisoners on our warrants. Coordinates transfers between Sheriff Department personnel and local officers.
  • Release prisoners who have made arrangements for bond, paid their fine, or served their sentence.
  • Swears to and signs authorized complaints (warrants) at the District Court.
  • Photographs and fingerprints civilian applicants for approved purposes.
  • Oversees the proper operation of the jail facility, enforcing policy, ensuring proper maintenance, and making reports for needed repair and correction.
  • Maintains computer data on all jail activity.
  • Handles the daily responsibilities of transferring items in or out of the evidence storage room, completes the required documentation and assists with other property room tasks as assigned by the Services Captain.
  • Assist remote officers with LEIN requests.
  • Transcribe reports and report data entry.
  • Miscellaneous duties/responsibilities as required or assigned.
  • Research and provide information to officers who are responding to calls or investigating complaints.
  • Monitor cameras and communicate with officers to assist in their response and enforcement.
  • Search camera systems, data systems, and web-based search engines to assist with officer response and investigations.
  • Assist Police Officers with crowd control and traffic direction and control.

  • Minimum of High School Education.
  • Ability to write proper reports of activity and incidents requiring such documentation.
  • Ability to properly handle personalities in various situations and demonstrate the ability to interact with people in a positive manner.
  • Ability to make proper physical apprehension of resisting suspects.
  • Maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license and ability to drive assigned vehicles.
  • Train and qualify in handgun and rifle use according to department specifications.
  • Complete all training requirements to include use of force tools, tactics, and techniques, according to department specifications.
  • Ability to use current computer technology and software to query for investigative purposes and complete data entry for reports.
  • Physical ability to frequently sit in one position for extended periods of time and occasionally lift/push/carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to control violent, resistive, or combative suspects, and use force when appropriate and necessary while remaining calm and professional.
  • Occasionally exposed to weather, including exposure to extreme heat/cold, or wet and humid conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, explosives, and toxic/caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally requires lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally requires climbing, balancing, stooping, or kneeling.
  • Occasionally requires reaching, including overhead reaching.
  • Driving of Police vehicles.
  • May be exposed to and required to handle/transport people with infectious diseases.
