The Watershed Institute is seeking a detail-oriented intern to assist with our Riverways community science bacteria monitoring program and harmful algal bloom monitoring at Wargo Pond, located on the Watershed Reserve in Pennington, NJ.
The internship runs from August 20 to October 17, 2025
, and is ideal for motivated high school seniors, undergraduate students, or recent graduates interested in environmental science, water quality, or public health. The position includes field, lab, and remote work for about 7-8 hours per week, and offers a stipend of $1,100 for the 9-week term, along with mileage reimbursement for any travel to collect samples.
Wednesdays (3–4 hours, in-person)
- Collect water samples at Wargo Pond
- Receive samples delivered by Riverways partners (after 2pm)
- Conduct bacteria and turbidity testing for Wargo and Riverways sites
Thursdays (2–3 hours, in-person)
- Perform chemical testing on Wargo Pond samples using a Gallery Discrete Analyzer
- Read and record bacteria results from incubated samples
Fridays (1–2 hours, remote)
- Enter bacteria data and upload to Survey
123 - Update Riverways ArcGIS Online map with new results
- September 17 – October 17:
Assist with test kit mailings for NJ Salt Watch - October 1 – October 15:
Conduct NJ Salt Watch field measurements as part of the statewide fall snapshot
- Comfortable working outdoors and in a laboratory setting
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally (mileage reimbursed)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and/or ArcGIS is a plus (training provided)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
