Your OpportunityStantec is seeking a highly motivated, personable Intermediate Vegetation Ecologist for a wide variety of projects within various development sectors such as oil and gas, mining, and transportation within the vegetation ecology and wetland disciplines. You will apply your expertise to collect field data, analyze and interpret results, develop assessments, and write reports.
You will work independently and/or supervise field teams and you will be a key member of the team that moves projects toward closure in the most cost‑effective manner.
The position will be based in one of our Manitoba or Saskatchewan offices (Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon).
YourKey Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct wetland assessments and biological inventories in accordance with provincial species detection protocols (e.g., vascular plant)
- Work on a variety of natural resource planning projects, including natural area inventories and biophysical assessments
- Contribute to Environmental assessments (vegetation and wetland aspects) for municipal, provincial, and federal regulators in multiple sectors, including oil and gas, mining, land development, transportation, renewable energy
- Assist with desktop mapping of wetlands and vegetation communities
- Adhere to Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures
- Interact directly with internal and external clients and contribute to developing excellent relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders
- Participate in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
- Execute specific technical tasks or requirements for medium to large projects
- Work proactively to further the technical needs of the team
- Ability to classify wetlands using different classification systems is considered an asset
- Proficient in and consistently demonstrating and promoting policies and procedures for HSSE, including client‑specific training (if applicable)
- Skilled in technical writing
- Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment under deadlines
- Familiarity with relevant provincial and federal regulations and guidelines as they pertain to vegetation and wetlands
- Experience with ecosystem mapping (e.g., TEM) is an asset
- Experience with identifying species at risk and weeds
- Proficient in MS Office, ArcGIS, or other mapping applications
- Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time, as well as work in the field. Fieldwork may include remote work, long drives, 1‑2 week shifts away from home, exposure to the elements including inclement weather
- Able to lift 50lbs and endure long days of physically and mentally challenging fieldwork while maintaining a positive, solution‑focused attitude
- Good driving record and valid Class 5 driver’s license required
Bachelor’s Degree in Science (biology, ecology, forestry or related field).
At least five years of relevant professional experience as a vegetation ecologist. Previous consulting experience is considered an asset.
Professional designation (R.P.Bio., R.P.F., P.Ag.) is an asset.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
