Position DescriptionThe Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) restores and advocates for clean water, healthy habitats, and resilient communities to support a diverse and thriving watershed. CRC highly values our staff and the unique backgrounds they bring to our shared mission.
CRC is seeking a part-time Aquatic Ecology Program Associate to assist the Aquatic Ecologist with field work, data management and analysis, outreach, and other program activities in 2026. Examples of this work may include (but are not limited to) planning and conducting sea lamprey nest counts and macroinvertebrate surveys, analyzing and mapping data, supporting eDNA sample collections and analysis, communicating program activities to the public, and monitoring fish passage facilities.
CRC is looking for motivated candidates with demonstrated experience conducting ecological research and who are passionate about aquatic ecosystems, conservation, community science, research translation, and the Connecticut River watershed. Field work will take place throughout the watershed in CT, MA, NH, and VT. CRC’s main office is in Greenfield, MA, however, remote work is available for qualified candidates. This position is funded by grants;
continued employment is dependent upon additional fund acquisition.
- Work under the supervision of the Aquatic Ecologist to fulfill grant activity requirements
- Conduct field work on foot, in-stream, and from boats
- Work with the Aquatic Ecologist and CRC’s Communications department to develop and disseminate news articles, social media posts, and in-person talks about program offerings
- Participate in grant writing to develop and expand the Aquatic Ecology program offerings
- Provide relevant expertise and knowledge to staff, partners, and the public when needed
- Engage in data management, analysis, interpretation, and report writing

- Postgraduate degree in natural sciences (ecology, biology, geology, hydrology, etc.) with experience designing and conducting field-based research projects
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of river ecology and biological systems; experience working with diadromous or endangered species preferred
- A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- Ability to undertake strenuous physical activity in-stream and to swim; motorized boat handling skills are a plus
- Familiarity with spreadsheets, data analysis tools, ArcGIS, and statistical software
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse group of partners, stakeholders, funders, and members of the public
- Experience with grants, including writing, managing, and reporting
- Commitment to equity and inclusion; enthusiasm about river health and ecology
- Satisfactory passage of background check is a requirement
Greenfield MA or remote/hybrid within the Connecticut River watershed
Salary and BenefitsThe salary range for this position is $27,. CRC provides medical, dental and vision benefits, ample paid time off, and up to a 3% match for retirement. Benefits are prorated for part-time employees.
