Research in the mines and environment field at UQAT is growing. Professors working in this sector are attached to the Institut de recherche en mines et en environnement (IRME), consisting of a multi-disciplinary team of 18 professors. The Unité de recherche et de service en technologie minérale (URSTM) research laboratories, as well as their technical and professional staff, support the deployment of multidisciplinary research projects IRME-URSTM organizational model relies on the pooling of human and material resources, which allows it to work and to distinguish itself in three areas of activity: training, research, and service.
Your roleThe individual selected will teach mainly individual students at the graduate level for the purposes of furthering their theoretical, scientific, and technological knowledge in the field of applied geophysics, including remote sensing and instrumentation, in the contexts of mineral exploration, mine waste management, hydrogeology, geotechnics, and mine site reclamation. The individual must carry out research and be able to secure funding for graduate students under their direction through grant agencies or other funds.
The individual selected will participate actively in the development and national and international outreach of IRME and its different partnerships (IRME UQAT-Polytechnique, ResMinA, research chairs) by the development of an innovative research program in the above-mentioned fields. The individual will be called upon to take on certain administrative tasks at IRME and will need to join the existing faculty team.
QualificationsRequirements
- Hold a doctorate with specialization in the field of applied geophysics, including remote sensing and instrumentation, and more specifically in the contexts of mineral exploration, mine waste management, hydrogeology, geotechnics, and mine site reclamation, or in another relevant field.
- Have a well-established, or promising, university research profile, for the purpose of initiating or continuing an independent, innovative, and high-level research program.
- Have teaching skills and the aptitudes for academic supervision of individual students at the graduate level.
- Have the inclination and aptitude to become part of, cooperate with, discuss and work in a team, as well as the ability to get involved in IRME's growth. Have an ability to fit into the IRME-URSTM organizational model, to secure research funds from external sources by way of granting agencies, and contracts for specialized service work.
- Experience in geophysical monitoring using diverse methods, remote sensing, instrumentation, and/or data integration and assimilation
- Proficiency with spoken and written French and English: a candidate who is not proficient in French may be considered, provided that this person undertakes to acquire, within an agreed timeframe, a satisfactory capacity to work in French.
Other Criteria Considered As Assets
- Have industrial experience, and a solid understanding of the Canadian or international mining sector.
- Have experience in cooperative research together with industrial partners, and a solid understanding of environmental issues related to mines.
- Have experience with inter- or multi-disciplinary research.
- Be a member of the Ordre des géologues du Québec or the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.
