The NAIT Forest Technology program is designed to train technologists with skill sets that allow them to plan and carry out resource management activities without compromising the integrity or sustainability of the ecosystems in which they practice. Students in our program learn how to manage forests responsibly and sustainably through a variety of field activities, class lectures and data analysis. The Educational Laboratory Technologist II plays a key role in supporting both instructors and students in a variety of settings.

NAIT’s Forest Technology program within the School of Energy and Natural Resources has an opening for a full-time Educational Laboratory Technologist. Following direction of the Forestry Program Chairs, and reporting directly to the Academic Strategy and Operations Manager, this position will support the program instructional staff in delivering classes in the labs and field camps. The successful candidate will be a team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills with a background in forest management activities.

This role supports instruction in courses such as wildfire management, reforestation, forest inventory, GPS and GIS applications, and forest harvesting, providing hands on assistance in labs and field exercises that prepare students for careers in sustainable forest management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with set-up of field camps and labs
  • Support fall camp, harvesting and survival labs
  • Prepare, maintain and repair program equipment
  • Transport equipment and students to field activities and program events
  • Setup and support classroom and lab activities
  • Provide mechanical and maintenance services
  • Liaise with contractors, as need
  • Other related duties
  • Skills & Abilities:

  • Periodic shift work and heavy manual labour for field camp labs and set-up
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) unassisted
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Strong computer proficiency using Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Effective time management is essential
  • Qualifications:

  • Diploma in a related field (e.g., Forest Technology Diploma)
  • Related industry experience
  • Registered or eligible for registration with AAFMP (Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 4 is an asset) – driver’s abstract required
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Chainsaw instructional certification (asset)
  • Type 1 Wildfire Crew Leader – certification with active operational experience in Alberta (asset)
  • Experience with GIS and GPS software/equipment (asset)
  • Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

    Remuneration
    : $51,138.62 - $69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Educational Laboratory Technologist II).

    This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
