My client is a growing digital marketing agency and they’re now looking to bring in a Commercial Manager to take full ownership of sales performance and revenue growth.
Role OverviewThis is a genuinely senior, hands‑on role with real authority. You’ll be trusted to run sales end‑to‑end, close work directly, and build a sales system that performs consistently without founder dependency.
The focus is on predictable, sustainable growth rather than short‑term wins. You’ll shape how sales is done, make commercial decisions independently, and balance growth with delivery capacity and long‑term retention.
Commercial Manager Responsibilities- Own the agency’s sales function end‑to‑end, from lead qualification through to closing.
- Lead sales conversations and personally close retainer‑based work (£1k–£5k/month, ~£3k average).
- Design, run, and continuously improve the sales system to support predictable revenue growth.
- Maintain a healthy pipeline with clear visibility and forecasting.
- Make commercial decisions independently rather than escalating by default.
- Apply pricing frameworks consistently and say no to poor‑fit opportunities.
- Sell honestly and accurately, without over promising or misrepresenting capability.
- Balance revenue growth with delivery capacity and long‑term client retention.
- Escalate genuine risks appropriately while owning outcomes.
- Own recruitment execution when additional capacity is required.
- Run hiring processes in line with agreed role definitions and recommendations.
- Collaborate closely with delivery teams to ensure sales activity aligns with operational reality.
- Proven experience owning sales or commercial performance in an agency or services‑based business.
- Comfortable leading sales conversations and closing retainer‑based, value‑driven work.
- Strong commercial judgement with the ability to make decisions under uncertainty.
- Experience designing or improving sales systems, not just closing individual deals.
- Comfortable working autonomously with minimal oversight.
- Accountable for outcomes, not just activity.
- High integrity, with a focus on sustainable growth rather than short‑term wins.
- Strong organisational skills and pipeline management capability.
- Experience working in digital marketing, SEO, PR, or similar agency environments.
- Familiarity with forecasting, pricing frameworks, or capacity planning.
- Experience supporting or running recruitment in a growing business.
- Background in scaling sales functions beyond founder‑led selling.
