The Job

The Field Operations Auditor conducts structured operational compliance assessments across Pet Smart store locations to evaluate execution of company standards, policies, and key operational controls. This is a hands‑on, store‑facing role designed for experienced Pet Smart operators who understand how stores run day‑to‑day and can objectively assess operational execution. The role provides exposure across diverse markets and store environments and plays a key part in protecting the Pet Smart brand through consistent, fact‑based evaluations.

While primarily focused on store assessments, the position may also support broader Internal Audit initiatives as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute standardized assessments covering approximately 300 attributes across six audit components.
  • Conduct a high volume of store audits annually (150+ once fully ramped), balancing efficiency with consistency and sound professional judgment.
  • Observe execution on the sales floor and in backroom areas, evaluating operational discipline and adherence to company standards.
  • Assess compliance with inventory management, pet care standards, salon and hotel operations, and safety requirements.
  • Interview Store Leadership and associates to validate processes and reinforce expectations.
  • Analyze audit results and apply sound professional judgment to assign component‑level ratings.
  • Communicate results clearly and professionally to Store and District Leadership.
  • Identify recurring execution themes and elevate systemic issues to Field Audit leadership.
  • Participate in physical inventory observations and support special projects as assigned, including limited distribution center or other operational reviews when needed.
  • Complete audit documentation accurately and within established timelines.
  • Build strong professional relationships across stores and corporate partners while maintaining objectivity.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of retail leadership experience required.
  • Pet Smart Store Leader, Process Leader (PLR), Experience Leader (ELR), or equivalent multi‑unit retail leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of operational excellence and execution discipline.
  • Strong understanding of store operations, including inventory management, pet care standards, salon and hotel operations, and safety requirements.
  • Ability to objectively assess store performance and apply standards consistently.
  • Confidence delivering clear, direct, and constructive feedback.
  • Strong analytical skills and sound professional judgment.
  • High integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a high‑travel environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (4+ hours) and occasionally bend, reach, and lift merchandise (up to 50 lbs.), with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard reporting tools.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in business or related field is a plus.
Work Environment
