Job Summary

Pet Smart’s Store Leader oversees safety, pet parent experience, operations, finances, and HR functions within the store. Provides leadership aligned with company culture and strategies, ensures exceptional service, and upholds Pet Smart’s mission and values.

Essential Responsibilities

Includes, but not limited to:

People Leadership:
  • Recruitment, hiring, coaching, termination decisions
  • Foster open-door culture, leverage associate feedback
  • Create and manage store schedules
  • Support associate development, reviews, recognition, training, onboarding, mentoring, succession planning
  • Delegate and empower team members
  • Communicate store priorities and respond to environment changes
  • Handle associate grievances
  • Recognize and promote engagement
  • Ensure timely delivery of reviews
Overall Store Experience:
  • Lead associate and pet parent experience, ensure pet safety and health
  • Manage pet parent interactions and resolve concerns
  • Create a positive store environment
  • Evaluate and improve store processes and services
  • Partner with community groups for events and adoption
  • Maintain store standards and compliance
  • Conduct safety and policy audits
  • Prioritize safety for staff, pets, and visitors
  • Manage inventory levels
  • Communicate business goals and monitor safety practices
  • Respond to health incidents involving pets
  • Support opening and closing procedures
Business Management:
  • Implement strategy and achieve profitability targets
  • Analyze reports, respond to issues, and implement improvements
  • Identify growth opportunities, manage P&L, control expenses
  • Coordinate with home office for store needs
  • Create schedules, process payroll, manage labor costs
  • Complete required reporting and administrative tasks
Qualifications:
  • 4-6 years retail leadership or customer service experience
  • Full-time, flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays
  • Proficient in computer applications
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and stay organized
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • Manage Experience Leader, Process Leader, lead associates, and non-leader associates
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
  • Stand, walk, climb, handle objects, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, see clearly; accommodate disabilities if needed
  • Lift up to 50 pounds regularly, more with team lift
  • Exposure to mechanical parts, wet environment, pet hair, moderate noise, live animals
