Job Description & How to Apply Below

The laboratory of Dr. Joanna Mattis is recruiting a technician to join our research team. Our laboratory (mattislab.org) is focused on understanding the impact of seizures on different neuromodulatory neuronal populations. We use several well-established mouse models combined with optogenetics, chemo genetics, calcium imaging, and slice and in vivo electrophysiology.

Responsibilities*

The technician will take a leading role in managing and maintaining our transgenic mouse colony, including overseeing breeding, performing genotyping, and working closely with multiple lab members to match the supply and demand of experimental animals. There will be additional administrative duties such as facilitating ordering of lab supplies and ensuring compliance with regulations. In addition to these tasks, the technician will also have an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to ongoing projects in the lab, at a level ranging from co-author to first author on resulting manuscripts, depending on interest, aptitude, and time commitment.

There will be opportunities to present within the lab and (pending research progress) beyond the lab as well. Relevant techniques will include stereotaxic surgeries for viral injections and/or electrode implants, seizure induction, perfusions, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, and analysis and presentation of data.

Dr. Mattis is a physician scientist (and practicing neurologist) with a strong interest in mentoring. The technician will meet regularly with Dr. Mattis 1 on 1 to discuss scientific progress and professional development. The technician will have additional close mentorship at the bench from an experienced staff scientist, multiple collaborative relationships with other lab members, and the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students (if desired and feasible).

Required Qualifications *
  • Bachelor's degree with relevant coursework in biology and/or neuroscience and 1 to 2 years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior laboratory experience with bench science (including animal handling and/or molecular biology techniques).
Desired Qualifications*
  • Specific experience with PCR and immunohistochemistry
  • Minimum 2 years of commitment to the lab is requested.
