TITLE:

Intern - Geospatial & Remote Sensing

LOCATION:

Kellogg Center, 328 Kellogg Blvd West, St. Paul, MN 55102

COMPENSATION: $16.50 hourly

HOURS:

This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately June 8, 2026 to August 30, 2026. A part-time intern must be available to work 15 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern's school schedule and operational needs. Preferred working hours are M-F between 9-5.

SEMINAR EVENTS:
Interns are required to participate in three, in-person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.

DESCRIPTION:

The intern will participate in fieldwork, including overnight travel, as well as computer work in the office. Project examples include: UAS, GNSS, and/or GPR data collection at MNHS site(s). Intern will synthesize site history, archaeological investigations, geospatial, and remote sensing data in a report/presentation. The intern's specific project will depend on their skills/interests.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Participation in fieldwork for geospatial and remote sensing projects (e.g. ground penetrating radar, uncrewed aircraft systems aka drones, and high precision global navigation satellite systems data collection);
2) Communicate verbally and in writing, a synthesis of research results, including geospatial, geophysical, and aerial data for archaeological projects;
3) Create maps using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online that meet organizational standards for reporting and contain data from external sources, organizational geodatabase(s), derived data, as well as data collected during fieldwork.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.
  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or a graduate with a degree in the following areas:
    Anthropology/Archaeology, American Indian Studies, Computer Science, Geology, Geography, Environmental Studies, Cultural Resources or Heritage Management, Public History, or related degrees.
  • Completed a field school or field program in anthropology/archaeology, geology or associated discipline
  • Coursework in archaeology
  • Coursework in geographic information science (GIS)
  • Desire to work in the field as well as in the office
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Detail-oriented
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, and Google Suite.
  • Desired, but not required:
    Experience with ESRI's ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
