Position: Researchers x 3 (2026 Processing Census)

Overview

We're currently looking for 3 enthusiastic, motivated and results‑oriented researchers to support our Economics team in implementing the annual Seafish Processing Sector Data Collection exercise by collecting socio‑economic data related to UK seafood processing businesses. This role involves telephone and desk‑based data collection and is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience within the UK seafood sector and to be part of our dynamic and busy Economics team.

The Economics team collects data, produces analysis and evidence in the form of Seafish's suite of economic reports, and provides advice to government and industry. Our outputs include the Performance of the Seafood Processing Industry, and our digital Enquiry Tools – see them here. This is a full‑time temporary role lasting up to 13 weeks. It is a UK‑based position, allowing the successful candidate to work from home or from our Edinburgh or Grimsby offices.

Some travel may be required, including attending the first week of in‑person training in Edinburgh and occasional team meetings. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. Extensive office‑based training will be provided during induction, covering interview techniques, health & safety, and background of the seafood industry. A possibility of extension to work on another project within the Economics team may be discussed toward the end of this fixed‑term contract.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately entering data collected in databases to ensure that the Seafish Economics team data sets are comprehensive and robust.
  • Managing and undertaking data entry and quality checking elements of primary and secondary research projects, to deliver raw data suitable for analysis.
  • Encouraging participation by industry businesses in data collection exercises.
  • Enabling capture of enquiries and feedback from industry stakeholders.
  • Organising own research tasks, with guidance and advice from members of the team.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional out‑of‑hours commitments, to maximise stakeholder participation.
  • Maintaining high standards of accuracy and data confidentiality.
  • Meeting agreed performance targets.
  • Following agreed scripts, processes, and data protection guidelines.
Key Relationships
  • External: Participants/respondents taking part in telephone interviews, stakeholders involved in the census project, or other external partners as required.
  • Internal: Working closely with another experienced researcher in the team and other members of the Economics team. The post‑holder reports to the Project Manager and receives guidance and support from the Head of the Economics team.
About the Economics, Insight and Advice Team

The Seafish Economics, Insight and Advice team provides research and insight on a range of topics and sectors in the seafood industry including fishing, processing, trade and retail. We collect and analyse data on the economic performance of fishing and processing businesses, their workforce and seafood trade and retail among other areas. We provide key advice to Government, industry and researchers which helps inform fisheries, labour and trade policies.

Our outputs include the Economics of the UK Fishing Fleet reports, UK seafood supply chain overview and our digital Enquiry Tools. Our processing census survey is a key piece of research looking into the health of the UK's seafood processing sector, investigating its economic performance and the demographics of its workforce. The outputs help us better understand the social impact of the industry on coastal communities and our food supply chain, and support evidence‑based decision making and impact assessment for regulatory affairs.
