Social Science Research Professional 2, General Surgery (78.5% FTE, 1-Year Fixed-Term). This position is based on the Stanford campus and is a hybrid (on-site and work-from-home) arrangement subject to operational need.

The interdisciplinary team within the Division of General Surgery and the Stanford-Surgery Policy Improvement Research and Education (S-SPIRE) Unit includes clinical and research faculty with expertise spanning implementation science, health economics, bioinformatics, and quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches. This is a 1-year fixed-term, part-time role to support research or develop public programs and policies requiring independent initiative and judgment. The successful candidate will provide guidance to less experienced colleagues.
Duties- Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment from completing high-level assignments, including defining variables, formulating hypotheses, selecting subjects or sources of information, and coordinating experimental protocols.
- Adapt or develop details of new, nonstandard procedures with supervisor guidance.
- Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
- Solve problems and make decisions that influence the direction of the research and contribute independently to the project.
- Select and apply standard calculations and formulas to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
- Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
- Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
- Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.
- Support S-SPIRE and Department of Surgery faculty with research data collection and analysis.
- Other duties may also be assigned.
- Master’s degree in public health or related field.
- Previous experience working on health services research projects.
- Interest in a position for at least two (2) years.
- Strong project management skills, including managing data collection from different participant types and time points.
- Understanding of basic statistics and familiarity with SPSS/STATA (quantitative).
- Strong qualitative methods expertise and familiarity with Dedoose/NVivo/Atlas.ti (qualitative) or similar qualitative data organization software.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to drive to different local on- and off-site locations for study recruitment and data collection.
- Ability to work independently with deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with human study participants.
- Ability to understand scientific literature, experimental/quasi-experimental procedures and their limitations, and current needs of the research community.
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or a combination of education and experience in an applicable social science.
