This role serves as the senior programmer/analyst in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study (NHBCS), an NIH-funded cohort that collects a vast array of survey and laboratory data on its participants on an ongoing basis. The position requires advanced expertise to design, develop, and maintain analysis tools for this complex, data-intensive study, supporting research that will continue through 2030.
Description- Design, develop and maintain analysis tools to support the NHBCS as a member of an academic research support team in the Department of Epidemiology.
- Develop and maintain data management systems that accommodate extensive data collection instruments used by the ECHO program.
- Serve as a key contributor to research projects, ensuring data quality, reproducibility, and timely delivery of results.
- Program design, scripting and maintenance of algorithms and applications to support multiple research projects and grants.
- Select appropriate technologies and resources needed to achieve project goals.
- Oversee and manage all local data requests and queries for the project.
- Calculate projected participant numbers for the Milestone Accrual Plan (MAP) to support NIH reporting.
- Conduct required data management to update the core dataset.
- Assist with publications in peer‑reviewed scientific journals or conferences.
- Understand project requirements, meet milestones, and adapt to changing conditions while recommending alternative solutions.
- Collaborate with Dartmouth faculty and staff, maintaining dialogue with project stakeholders.
- Document project technologies and communicate effectively with project colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in public health, statistics, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 5–7 years of professional experience in statistics, data management, epidemiology, or related field.
- 3–5 years of experience managing complex data systems and supervising/mentoring junior research programmers/analysts.
- Extensive understanding of rigorous and efficient research design, implementation, and analytic methodologies, especially in epidemiology.
- Advanced SAS knowledge, including experience with SAS functions, developing SAS macros, merging large datasets, and modeling.
- Advanced knowledge of the R programming language and a general understanding of object‑oriented computing.
- Demonstrated epidemiologic data expertise and ability to mentor analytic activities across all levels.
- Proven ability to interact effectively with staff, management, and executive leadership internally and externally.
- Experience with other statistical software/programming languages (e.g., SPSS, STATA, Python).
- Experience with data management tools such as REDCap and API integration.
- Ability to work independently and proactively advance methods and studies.
- Sound judgment in interactions with internal and external collaborators.

- Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
