We are recruiting a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Palmer, Alaska! What You Will Be Doing:This PCN is a Sport Fish Division research Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 that implements research assessment projects as a crew lead at a field camp(s). Currently this permanent seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 position leads other crew members in the daily tagging (Radio tags) and sampling of Chinook salmon captured by fishwheel in the lower Yentna River approximately 6 river miles upstream from the confluence of the Susitna River.
Duties include working with and leading 2 Fish and Wildlife Technicians in the field, implementing data quality control, summarizing and relaying data to the office, entering data into a spreadsheet, operating and maintaining fish wheels and weirs, composing supply orders, and assorted field camp maintenance. Other tasks of this camp crew lead include directing daily tasks according to an operational plan, recording fish species and length data, collecting tissue samples, tagging salmon with esophageal radio tags, operating and maintaining river boats, operating highway vehicles with boat trailers, deploying, constructing, maintaining, and dismantling the field camp(s).
Crew members record and enter data daily.
Other tasks include enumerating other fish species captured, maintenance of fish wheels, preparation of gear, and general maintenance of a remote field camp. This position potentially works with other field camps installing and dismantling field camps and filling in where needed.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:This position is for a permanent seasonal camp crew lead for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Sport Fish Division, Northern Cook Inlet Research in Palmer, AK. Currently this position will be working on a Fish wheel project capturing Chinook salmon to enumerate, sample, and tag with Radio Tags on the Yentna River six river miles upstream from the Susitna River confluence.
This position leads the daily operation of fish wheels and makes sure that radio tags are deployed according to the operational plan, and reports the daily data to the home office in Palmer, AK. Operating jet outboard motors and skiffs on large shallow glacial streams of Southcentral Alaska and capturing salmon with a fish wheel are daily occurrences. Chinook salmon data including age sex and length are recorded and entered into an Excel spreadsheet daily and data quality control is done by this position while in the field.
This position will reside at a remote field camp with up to two other technicians for the Chinook season, which is approximately 1.5 to 2 months (May to June) and will assist with overseeing most aspects of camp operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for room and board while in Palmer, upon river breakup the remainder of the season will be spent at a field camp where room and board will be provided.
This position will also potentially assist other projects within the Palmer, AK Sport Fish Division office installing and dismantling field camps and weir equipment in various locations.
