Fish and Wildlife Technician ; PCN

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Ketchikan, Alaska!

This permanent seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 position is stationed at the Hugh Smith Lake field camp near Ketchikan, AK, from approximately mid-April to early June. The primary duties of the position include capturing, coded-wire tagging, and sampling juvenile coho and sockeye salmon as they outmigrate. Additional duties include installing and maintaining a smolt weir, coordinating inseason field logistics, general upkeep of a seasonal camp, leading a two-person crew, and overseeing accurate data collection.

This position is a permanent, seasonal crew lead of the Hugh Smith Lake coho salmon smolt tagging crew. By overseeing the smolt tagging, this position helps ADF&G monitor wild coho salmon stocks in Southeast Alaska. The data collected by this important position guides in-season management and helps to continue sustainable harvest and scientific research of coho salmon stocks.

The Southeast Alaska Coho Salmon Research team is committed to providing mentorship, professional growth prospects, and a healthy work environment for all employees. Working at a remote field camp in beautiful Southeast Alaska allows the opportunity for exceptional field experiences in pristine wilderness while learning unique technical skills.

This position will perform remote fieldwork along Hugh Smith Lake, approximately 40 miles from Ketchikan, Alaska and accessed by float plane. This location is in Misty Fjords National Monument. For the duration of fieldwork, approximately 2 months, the position will be stationed at the tagging site. Daily work is comprised of:

• maintaining a weir requiring some swimming and diving
• capturing and coded wire tagging juvenile coho and sockeye salmon
• operating small outboard boats and rafts
• entering and managing data
• communicating results with project managers

This position will work as the crew lead of a two person crew and may require flexible hours and weekend work with overtime opportunities.

• Requires working at remote field camp locations for extended periods of time (up to eight weeks)
• This position is located in bear country; therefore the incumbent must be able to carry and operate a firearm for safety reasons. Firearms and ammunition are for protections when working in the field.

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

• Ability to live and work in a remote Alaskan cabin, outdoors and in close quarters with coworkers
• Experience in the capture, collection of biological data and application of coded-wire tags (CWT) in juvenile salmon
• Experience entering and managing biological data sets
• Basic knowledge and experience using hand and power tools
• Demonstrated leadership skills

A valid driver's license is required. Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms. First Aid/CPR training is provided by the department at no cost if not already certified.
