Job SummaryThe Golf Course Greenskeeper I is enlisted to maintain exceptional golf course features and contribute to continuous improvement in order to achieve the mission of providing an exceptionally valuable golf experiences.
This position is designated as 'Special Schedule' which means shift times and days worked each week will vary depending on seasons and business needs.
Responsibilities- Perform daily golf course set-up duties, including changing pin locations and tee markers, mowing, raking, manual watering, weeding, trimming, and general cleanup.
- Repair irrigation systems.
- Operate irrigation systems using automated computer programs (test/simulation).
- Place and operate movable irrigation systems.
- Remove unwanted vegetation by weeding or cultivation with hand tools.
- Remove or trim trees, shrubs, and brush using chainsaws, wood chippers, and stump grinders.
- Install and maintain new tree and shrub plantings.
- Mix and apply selective and non-selective herbicides and fertilizers.
- Mix and apply pesticides.
- Remove snow and ice using shovels, plows, and salt spreaders.
- Disassemble, clean, and sharpen reel and rotary mower blades.
- Clean, maintain, and lubricate assigned equipment, and make adjustments for proper operation.
- Provide customer service to industry standards.
- Perform duties in keeping with the maintenance standards of the golf course.
- Assist in building or restoration of golf course structures such as greens, tees, fairways, drainage systems, and bunkers using loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, trenchers, leveling equipment, and other equipment used in the golf course maintenance industry.
- Assist in the installation of irrigation systems.
- Clean assigned areas of work and equipment.
- Repair and adjust equipment with the assistance of mechanic.
- Perform or assist with annual maintenance of equipment such as carts, trailers and mowers, including replacing fluids, filters, bearings, seals, worn parts, and grinding reel and bed knives.
- Facility maintenance.
- Train temporary staff.
- Minimum of two years golf course maintenance experience.
- Valid (or willing and able to obtain) commercial pesticide applicators license (Minimum, category 3A turfgrass pest management).
- Basic knowledge of irrigation operation and repairs (test/simulation).
- Experience performing daily golf course set-up duties, including changing pin locations and tee markers, mowing, raking, manual watering, weeding, trimming, and general cleanup (blowing, sweeping etc.).
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to train temporary staff.
- Demonstrated, effective customer service skills.
- Experience using hand and power tools used in the industry.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work in various weather conditions.
- Demonstrated mechanical ability to perform basic maintenance and repair of turf management equipment.
- Demonstrated experience effectively working in a team environment.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
