Overview
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, is recruiting for a Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2/3 in Palmer, Alaska. This position is open to all applicants.
Responsibilities- Fire suppression actions, including digging hand line, using power saws and water pumps.
- Maintain fire gear readiness and work on hazard fuels mitigation projects.
- Provide daily supervision for 10-20 firefighters on a Type II IA Crew.
- Perform as an Incident Commander during initial attack of low complexity wildland fires; lead firing and holding operations on initial/extended attack fires; provide input on fire line placement; and deliver thorough safety briefings for assigned firefighters.
- Instruct NWCG courses and contribute to developing and leading training in basic wildland fire principles.
- Based out of Palmer, Alaska; dispatched nationally and to Canada to respond to fires and all-hazard incidents.
- Work and live in remote environments with limited connectivity.
- 14–21 days of field duty, with potential work as a single resource or as part of a team.
- Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2 – starting salary $27.25 per hour;
Six months of trainee or entry-level wildland firefighting or forestry field experience (equivalent experience acceptable). Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System (NQS/NIMS) required. - Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 3 – starting salary $30.80 per hour;
Twelve months of wildland firefighting or forestry field experience, with at least six months at the developmental level. Developmental experience may be met by service as a Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or equivalent. Red Card qualification required. - Education substitution for Techs 2 and 3: completed coursework in forestry, fire science, or related field may substitute for up to six months of general field experience; transcripts or official letters indicating coursework credit are required.
- There is no substitution for the six months of developmental experience or for the Red Card qualifications.
- Special notes:
Applicants must be at least 18; NIQS/NIMS certifications;
Work Capacity Test at the Arduous level;
Alaska driver’s license; travel requirements; and potential for out-of-area assignments.

- Flexible staffing: position is flexibly staffed; base offer level may change after training and qualification completion.
- Driver’s license verification will be required prior to reporting to duty; firearms may be required; certain positions may require a CDL and endorsements.
- Arduous Work Capacity Test, remote work conditions, long hours; possible travel within Alaska and to the Lower 48 states.
