Named Veterinary Surgeon

We are seeking an experienced Named Veterinary Surgeon to support a research establishment operating to the highest standards of animal health, welfare, and regulatory compliance.

This is a key leadership role, working closely with animal care teams, researchers, and governance bodies to ensure veterinary oversight aligns with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) and Home Office requirements.

As the Named Veterinary Surgeon, you will provide independent veterinary advice and oversight across regulated activities, ensuring animal welfare remains central to all operations.

• Acting as the Named Veterinary Surgeon in accordance with ASPA and Home Office guidance
• Providing veterinary care, advice, and oversight for animals housed and managed under the establishment license
• Advising on experimental design, severity classification, analgesia, anaesthesia, and humane endpoints
• Supporting and contributing to the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB)
• Working collaboratively with Named Persons (NACWO, NTCO, NIO) and facility management
• Ensuring compliance with veterinary, ethical, and welfare standards across the establishment
• MRCVS status and eligibility to work as a veterinary surgeon in the UK
• Eligibility to act as a Named Veterinary Surgeon under ASPA
• Strong working knowledge of Home Office regulations and ethical frameworks
• Experience working within research, preclinical, or regulated animal environments
• Excellent communication skills and the confidence to provide independent advice
• Familiarity with AWERB processes and Home Office inspections
