Job Summary

These positions do not qualify for UMHS benefits. Terms and conditions of employment are negotiated at the department level and are not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association or the U of M Professional Nurse Council. Unit-based temporary employees who have worked 400 hours in a calendar year become Per Diem employees and have an obligation to pay dues or service fees per the collective bargaining agreement.

Once the employee meets the 400‑hour threshold, they become a union member for the duration of employment as Per Diem. Temporary APRN employees and MVC temporary employees are not eligible for Per Diem status.

Responsibilities

Provide anesthesia and anesthesia‑related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic and/or surgical procedures to all patients regardless of age under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist, working collaboratively in a team environment. Prepare pre‑operative assessments including health histories and physical examinations. Develop the Anesthesia Care Plan with the anesthesiologist. Initiate and maintain appropriate perioperative anesthesia care. Maintain appropriate patient records including quality assurance documentation.

Complete post‑operative evaluations in accordance with department policies. Participate in ongoing projects. Support perioperative providers. Other duties or projects as assigned. Function in accordance with all institutional policies and guidelines. Maintain licensure, certification, credentialing, and current BLS and ACLS or PALS status at all times. This position requires radiation exposure and the requirement to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Must be able to fulfill required weekend obligations. Must be self‑directed, reliable, demonstrate initiative and motivation to work independently, and demonstrate excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.

Nursing Specific Information

To be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

Required Qualifications
  • Current and accurate resume and application must be completed.
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
  • Current Michigan RN license and certification as a nurse anesthetist.
  • Two years full‑time equivalent (FTE) of nurse anesthesia experience.
  • Current ACLS or PALS certification.
Desired Qualifications
  • Five years of adult ICU nursing experience.
  • Five years FTE of nurse anesthesia experience.
  • Demonstration of appropriate interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Doctoral degree from an accredited educational program.
  • Wearing the appropriate PPE as this position requires radiation exposure.
Work Schedule

Hours:

Based on unit needs. Shift: Day/Evening/Might rotation; variable shift start times and shift length.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.
