This position will serve as part of the El Paso VAHCS and William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) Surgical Expansion pilot to expand WBAMC surgical services to VA beneficiaries to include increased capabilities in Orthopedic, General Surgery, and Neurosurgery clinics and operative procedures.
DutiesThe primary purpose of the Licensed Practical/License Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) is to perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the Veteran. The LPN/LVN is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice. Technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
Knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patients' conditions; to use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and to accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
- Serves as a practical nurse as part of a nursing care team in the outpatient surgical clinic(s), and is responsible for the intake and screening of patients within the clinic.
- Responsible for a variety of treatment procedures and the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages who are scheduled for treatment of illness, minor clinical procedures, preventive health care, and/or pre and post‑operative care.
- Prepares and administers prescribed medications by oral, topical, intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular routes; administers prescribed oxygen and respiratory therapy treatments.
- Administers Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other resuscitative measures as needed.
- Takes vital signs, draws blood; collects and prepares specimens such as routine urine, stool, sputum and cultures for laboratory analysis.
- Assists physicians during diagnostic, therapeutic and/or minor clinical procedures by preparing necessary supplies and equipment; drapes, positions, holds the patient and hands instruments and supplies to the physician during the procedure.
- Extensive sterile dressing application and packing, wound care.
- Monitors patients and observes, identifies, reports and records changes in their objective signs, subjective symptoms, and physical and emotional status. Promptly assesses and independently takes actions to alleviate problems reflected in subtle changes in the patient's condition such as dizziness or slight rise in temperature in accordance with prior training, instructions, policies, accepted nursing practices and the assigned patient care plans.

PayCompetitive salary and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off37‑50 days of annual paid time off per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
