Objective
The Nonprofit Research Intern plays an important, time-limited role on the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN’s) policy team, contributing to the research, coordination, layout, and design of the 2026 Minnesota Nonprofit Economy Report (MNER). The MNER is an annual study led by MCN that analyzes public data on nonprofit employers, employment, and wages to understand the role nonprofit organizations play in the state’s economy.
The MNER, published for the last 20 years, provides the most comprehensive nonprofit economic information available in the nation. The selected candidate will leave this position with a deep understanding of Minnesota’s nonprofit sector and its unique role relative to the state’s broader economy.

Learn the structure of the existing MS Excel dataset and make updates to reflect the most recently available information. Data accuracy within the dataset (references) as well as in conjunction with the previous year’s reports will be crucial.

For the report, which include statewide, Twin Cities, and regional breakdowns on key information such as:
- Number of employers and employment locations
- Number of employees
- Average annual wages by sector
- Average annual wages by nonprofit industries
- Geographic distribution of nonprofits by industry

Work with the Research Manager and other relevant team members to produce the full MNER, providing input on report narrative and key findings based on their data analysis. The Intern will lead the design and layout of the report within Adobe InDesign, and work with relevant team members on copyediting.
- Ability to work independently and take on new tasks
- Attention to detail is extremely important
- In-depth experience using Adobe InDesign, Excel (creating and editing charts and graphs), Microsoft Word
- Proven ability to manage highly detailed projects from beginning to end
Project coordination skills are central to ensuring that publication timelines are met. A successful candidate will have proven project coordination experience as well as demonstrated skills using Microsoft Excel (basic formula, multi-tab analysis; creating and editing charts and graphs), and publication layout in Adobe InDesign. Experience with ArcGIS or similar visual data mapping software is preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands- Requires a high level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy
- Requires frequent use of a telephone including the ability to communicate in a clear and understandable manner
- Frequently requires the ability to work several hours at a time at a desk
- Requires frequent participation in repetitive motion activities including typing on a computer keyboard
Reports to: Research Manager
Classification: Intern, part-time (10 hours/week), temporary, non-exempt
Compensation: $18/hr;
This position is not benefits eligible

Schedule:
This is a 12-week, 10-hour per week position beginning approximately June 1st. The hours per week may vary depending on the pace of the project. Remote work options are available within MCN’s business hours (Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Some flexibility will be accommodated as necessary.
Location: The Intern is required to reside in Minnesota and invited to work occasionally at MCN’s St. Paul office. Due to the complexity of varying state labor and tax laws across the United States, work outside of Minnesota is generally not permitted.
