West Hawai‘i Mediation Center is seeking to fulfill a unique full-time position. We are looking for one new employee who will have dual roles and responsibilities:
1) Peer Mediation Coordinator; AND
2) Landlord/Tenant Mediation Coordinator. For the purpose of this job description, the roles are described separately below. The position requires a resident of West Hawai‘i, but is a remote job within a West Hawai‘i community.
$55,000-$60,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
Peer Mediation Coordinator (18 hours per week)The Peer Mediation Coordinator (PMC) aspect of this job is responsible for maintaining and expanding the existing school-based peer mediation and conflict resolution programs established and/or developed by WHMC, in concert with the Executive Director and as outlined in the Center’s strategic plan. Coordination includes the oversight and implementation of our Peer Mediation program and building effective partnerships and youth programs that aid in promoting conflict resolution as a catalyst for positive change.
Training/Education- Delivers effective and age-appropriate conflict resolution and peer mediation training to grade 3-12 students, teachers, and administrative staff in West Hawai‘i schools.
- Evaluates training curriculum and modifies as needed.
- Develops a cadre of adult mediator volunteers and mentors to assist in middle and high school training.
- Effectively utilizes virtual training modalities when necessary.
- Effectively builds relationships with current and new partner schools and onsite PM coordinators; offering conflict resolution and PM support as needed.
- Regularly communicates with Peer Mediation Coordinators to ensure programs are running smoothly.
- Communicates with the E.D. regularly about youth programming and funding.
- Develops and administers effective evaluation tools for PM program; including conflict surveys, training evaluations, mediator self evaluations, mediation surveys, and sustainability criteria for each partner school.
- Coordinates an end of year PM celebration and/or conference for partnership schools, students, and families.
- Develops an annual budget for youth programming in concert with E.D.
- Compiles data and benchmarks for grant reports to meet funder requirements.
- Works with the DOE to ensure the program is understood and supported.
- Works alongside the E.D. to engage PM students and their families in program services and fundraising events.
The Landlord/Tenant Mediation Coordinator (EMC) aspect of this job is responsible for assisting with all designated Act 278 Landlord Tenant eviction cases; conducting intakes, scheduling mediations, working with contract mediators, communicating effectively with clients, and recording and reporting prescribed data points for the program.
The EMC position is funded by a contract through Mediation Centers of Hawai‘i to provide eviction mediations to landlords and tenants prior to landlords eligibility to file summary possessions cases in court. This position remains through the duration of the two-year contract, with possibility of an extension.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct intakes for all eviction mediation inquiries.
- Schedule Landlord Tenant mediations and assign mediators to mediation sessions.
- Prepare and send information packets for appropriate LLT mediations.
- Make reminder calls and emails to participants.
- Collaborate and manage independent contract mediators for program needs.
- Manage all LLT mediations, including: signed confidentiality pledges, signed agreements, send and receive feedback surveys, landlord forms, and appropriate Zoom management.
- Organize data and information using both Google Drive and Data Management system.
- Mediate as necessary; fulfilling duties to meet the need.
- Communicate and work well with other staff members as required.
- Assist Executive Director as needed.
Ideal candidates have a history of working with children and youth; combined with experience/education in conflict resolution, social work, peace studies, or restorative justice. The Coordinator should demonstrate organizational skills, written and verbal skills, the ability to multi-task, work successfully both individually and on a team, and be proficient in various technologies — cloud based systems like Google Drive, video conferencing, Docu Sign, and Word.
