Position Title:

Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator

Our Saviour’s Community Services (OSCS) provides dignified shelter and housing for single adults and basic education classes to adult English language learners in the Phillips Community of South Minneapolis. OSCS takes its name from Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, which founded our programs in the early 1980s. In 2004, we became a legally and financially independent nonprofit. We are not a religious organization.

This Role

The Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of volunteer recruitment, onboarding, and retention for Our Saviour’s Community Services. This role is part of the Development and Communications team. Their work raises the visibility of OSCS and its programs and supports the organization in reaching its annual fundraising goals. The volunteer role supports daily operations of programs through retention and recruitment of volunteers.

This role is a full‑time, non‑exempt, hybrid position, with flexibility to work from home 1–2 days per week. Work hours are generally from 11am-7pm Monday-Friday, with occasional weekends or shifted hours for special events. This role reports to the Development and Communications Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Outreach/Recruiting Volunteers
    • Recruit volunteer groups and individuals through outlets such as companies, faith communities, educational settings, etc.
    • Conduct interviews and background checks for volunteers to ensure they are a good fit for OSCS.
    • Stay connected with OSCS program staff to fully understand volunteer needs and update roles to meet evolving needs.
    • Coordinate with program staff to schedule volunteers.
    • Keep volunteer job descriptions and in‑kind donation needs updated.
  • Build and Maintain Relationships with Volunteers
    • Help volunteers through the onboarding process.
    • Along with OSCS program staff, develop training materials for volunteers.
    • Welcome new volunteers and check in with existing volunteers on a regular basis.
    • Develop and implement ways to thank and celebrate volunteers.
    • Implement plans to help volunteers expand their experiences within the organization.
    • Coordinate volunteer events.
    • Supervise volunteers of OSCS.
  • Documentation
    • Track volunteer information in database and calendars.
    • Maintain a system for tracking in‑kind donations.
    • Provide statistics and reports as needed on volunteer data.
  • Collaboration
    • Be a collaborative member of the Development and Communications team.
    • Coordinate with the Shelter Cook and staff for meal planning.
    • Attend Development and Communications team meetings as scheduled.
    • Share volunteer and in‑kind donation needs and information to be included in external communications.
    • Actively participate in building a culture of belonging within OSCS.
    • Work toward the OSCS mission of building skills and improving lives, and uphold our organizational values.
    • Train staff on volunteerism, procedures, and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • Experience creating training or instructional materials is a plus.
