This role is focused on communications and programming support. Students or individuals with interests in visual art, craft, living heritage, and community engagement are encouraged to apply!

We are seeking funding through both provincial and federal employment programs. To be eligible for this position the candidate must be:

  • a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
  • legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
  • between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
  • a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
OR
  • be a Canadian Citizen and permanent resident of Newfoundland and Labrador of at least one year
  • currently unemployed/underemployed
  • legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number)

Job Description

With support from the Programming Director and Board of Directors, the Communications Coordinator will:

  • Support community outreach initiatives
  • Support social media updates on Instagram and Facebook
  • Developing a narrative voice on our Instagram and Facebook that shares the impacts and effects of UHA programs.
  • Planned interviews and visit with resident artists and exhibiting artists to write a profiles and an accompanying article and/or video piece about their practice and work
  • Developing graphics for posters and event promotion
  • Develop a social media strategy for UHA
  • Write monthly newsletters to our membership
  • Assist with planning and implementation of outdoor programming such as public workshops and events
  • Running community programming that may include community barbeques, bonfires, backyard movie nights, or other events that the candidate works to implement over the summer at UHA
  • Support and implement programming such as workshops, exhibition receptions, and artist talks
  • Process and track data on visitor numbers, workshop attendance, memberships, and project impact using Microsoft Excel
  • Coordinate and implement fundraising initiatives
  • Researching and compiling funding streams
  • Supporting the development and delivery of fundraising events and initiatives in communication with the fundraising committee
  • Organize and participate in local markets, festivals and other outreach activities
  • Document events with photos and notes with data
  • Assist with outdoor studio support for artist residency program
  • Assist visiting artists with questions and issues
  • Greet gallery visitors during open hours
  • track sales of merchandise, donations, and memberships
  • Track visitation numbers, including attendance from events and workshops
  • Aid visitors by providing information about the Gallery and the Port Union area
  • Assisting staff and artists with install and de-install of exhibitions including but not limited to handling of artworks, preparing for shipping, painting, cleaning as needed

The Communications Coordinator will also be responsible for various other gallery and garden maintenance tasks such as preparing artist residency apartments and studios in between visitors, set up and clean up during workshops, watering and weeding plans, and locking up the building at the end of open hours or an event. Other tasks may be assigned as required upon consultation with the employee.

This position is intended for an individual who has some experience working with arts organizations and is enthusiastic about developing networks and working with artists from across the province and country.

  • Skills to work independently
