Position Description

Facing History & Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to racism, antisemitism, and other forms of bigotry and hate.

As a member of the Evaluation team, the Evaluation Specialist will be responsible for carrying out program evaluation activities that contribute to the evidence base for the organization, inform program development and strategy, and assess the Program team’s progress towards its strategic goals.

The Evaluation team has a significant mandate in generating new knowledge to inform the Program’s direction and support its growth. In order to maximize learning and insights that will inform organizational strategy and development, the Evaluation team interfaces with departments across the organization, including Program, Development, Marketing & Communications, the CEO, and Executive Directors of regional offices.

We are an experienced and professional Evaluation team that cares deeply about the mission and work of our organization. We are highly collaborative, both within our team and with other departments, to ensure the effectiveness of Facing History programs. We appreciate and honor the unique talents, experiences, and perspectives we each bring to the team, and work collectively to contribute to the organization’s success.

Responsibilities (the Evaluation team has the following functions):

  • Clearly articulate what is known from evaluations about the program’s effectiveness to stakeholders through written summaries and presentations. We are challenging ourselves to find new ways to communicate our evidence base to help a range of audiences understand our program’s impact. These audiences include staff, our board members and funders, school and district leaders, and the broader education field.
  • Carry out new evaluation studies to fill gaps in our knowledge, fulfill funder requirements, support continuous programmatic learning and improvement
  • Support the organization in using knowledge from research and evaluation to apply insights and guide program and organizational strategy. This includes participating in a cross functional team that shares knowledge, coordinates learning agendas, and develops insights to support organizational learning and growth
  • Keep abreast of advances in relevant fields of education, developmental psychology, and evaluation and apply their implications to Facing History Program strategy
  • Ensure staff development across the organization related to understanding and using evaluation findings
