The Role
Balfour Beatty is a leading international infrastructure group delivering complex projects across the UK and globally. We are currently seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our Regional Build team on a major healthcare refurbishment project in Birmingham.
As Design Manager, you will lead the management and coordination of the design process throughout the project lifecycle. Working closely with the project delivery team, consultants, and client representatives, you will ensure that designs are fully developed, coordinated, and aligned with programme, budget, and quality requirements.
This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the transformation of an operational healthcare facility, ensuring design excellence, technical compliance, and seamless coordination between design and construction teams.
What you'll be doingAs a Design Manager You Will
- Manage the design process from pre-construction through to project completion.
- Coordinate design consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure integrated design delivery.
- Review and manage design documentation to ensure compliance with healthcare standards, statutory regulations, and project specifications.
- Monitor design progress against programme and resolve technical issues proactively.
- Lead design meetings and provide clear communication between stakeholders.
- Ensure buildability, cost efficiency, and programme considerations are embedded in the design.
- Support risk management by identifying design-related risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
- Proven experience as a Design Manager within the construction industry.
- Experience delivering refurbishment or healthcare sector projects is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of design management processes within a main contractor environment.
- Knowledge of UK building regulations and healthcare design standards.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Relevant construction or engineering qualification (degree or equivalent).
