Position: Risk Manager - Balfour Beatty Highways | Hyde | Risk Audit Quality | Highways - Hyde
Location: Hyde

About the role

Balfour Beatty Highways delivers major schemes including smart motorway upgrade programmes, complex national infrastructure projects, and regional investment programme works for our key customer, National Highways.

As a Risk Manager, you will lead risk management across complex major projects or a portfolio of schemes. You will provide authoritative expertise in identifying, assessing, mitigating, and communicating risks to ensure robust decision-making, value protection, and compliance with business and risk standards. You will strengthen organisational risk maturity by facilitating high-quality workshops, coaching project teams, challenging assumptions, and embedding best-practice techniques across disciplines.

Acting as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and clients, you will ensure risks and opportunities are proactively managed and escalated. Professional accreditation in risk management, such as APM Risk Practitioner or IRM certification, is expected, alongside a commitment to continuing professional development.

What you'll be doing

You will apply strong professional judgment to ensure consistent and effective risk management across all projects, providing clear escalation, transparency, and accurate representation of risk exposure.

You will lead risk management across multiple schemes, providing expert advice to project leadership to protect programme, cost, safety, and commercial outcomes, and review and assure risk information for clarity, completeness, and realistic impact assessments.

You will plan and facilitate structured risk workshops, ensuring outputs translate into clear actions and meaningful movement on risk exposure, and support quantitative and qualitative analysis to inform decision-making.

You will act as the primary risk contact for clients and partners, ensuring aligned understanding of exposure, movement, and mitigation plans, and support change, forecasting, and commercial discussions with risk-based insight.

You will review risk inputs from subcontractors and suppliers, support tender reviews by evaluating risk allocations, constraints, and uncertainties, and produce concise, accurate portfolio-level risk reporting including key trends, emerging risks, and progress on mitigations.

You will coach and mentor project teams to strengthen risk understanding and behaviours and support the development of less experienced risk practitioners where applicable.

Who we're looking for

You will have proven experience delivering effective risk management across major or multi-discipline infrastructure projects, with a strong understanding of core risk management principles including cause-event-consequence, controls versus actions, and impact and probability.

You will have demonstrated ability to facilitate structured risk workshops and drive clear, actionable outcomes, and the ability to interpret and communicate risk insights and trends to senior stakeholders.

Experience working collaboratively with commercial, planning, engineering, and delivery teams is required, along with proficiency in recognised risk tools and systems.
