Head of Health Safety & Wellbeing

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) to join our team. This role will support Balfour Beatty Power T&D’s National Grid operations across England and Wales, including Major Projects, Overhead Lines and Substation projects. The location for this position is flexible.

• Provide advice, support and direction to all project HSW teams so they can deliver Zero Harm in a coherent and coordinated manner.
• Undertake Health and Safety compliance evaluations, tours and audits to ensure sufficient assurance of project activities.
• Work with Executive General Managers / Managing Directors / Directors to carry out project and business sector HSW performance reviews and reporting using lagging and leading indicators.
• Collaborate with the HSW Director to develop and ensure the delivery of the BB / Power HSW Strategy.
• Review and investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty standards to identify and share lessons learned across Power T&D and the wider BB team.
• Track actions and recommendations and apply the SIER process.
• Fulfil HSW, Customer and Balfour Beatty accident reporting requirements.
• Monitor, collate and interpret health and safety performance data, close out inspection and accident investigation reports, and provide routine management reports.
• Manage the recruitment of HSW Professionals across responsible area.
• Coach, mentor and manage HSW Professionals where required.
• Deputise for the HSW Director where required.
• Liaise with regulators and develop proactive relationships.
• Work with the wider BB HSW team to promote Zero Harm and continuous improvement through special projects, local initiatives and HSES improvement plans.
• Develop professional relationships with customers and their HSW professionals.
• Support the implementation and improvement of the BMS.
• Perform any other tasks as determined by HSW Function and/or SBU Senior Management.

• Corporate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (or working towards)
• NEBOSH Diploma or NCRQ qualification
• Detailed, technical knowledge and experience of Health and Safety legislation, regulations and guidance.
• Experience in Utilities and/or Construction industry, particularly CDM.
• Experience working in construction / Utilities.
• Prior experience providing leadership and support to operational and functional teams at a senior level.
• Prior experience developing proactive relationships with challenging customers.
