Job SummaryYou will direct the major gift program in the region with a primary focus on West, Mid- and Northern Michigan and represent the breadth of the University of Michigan in that territory. You will develop and execute long‑ and short‑term strategies to secure major gifts and planned gifts ($100,000 or more) in collaboration with senior academic leaders and development colleagues.
You will implement your responsibilities through regular visits with U‑M constituents throughout the assigned region, focusing on fieldwork with established donors and discovery of new prospective donors.
Reports to: Senior Director of Major Gifts, Midwestern States
- Supervises:
Functional Supervision of Shared Development Assistant

- Prospect Management and Solicitation (70%):
Develop and execute long‑and short‑range strategies to identify prospects capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more. Maintain a pace of 120 visits, make 15‑25+ asks, and close 10‑20 gifts per year. - Partnership with Campus Colleagues (15%):
Develop and maintain relationships with academic and other unit colleagues on campus. Attend quarterly retreats with the National Major Gifts Team and hold regional events that result in prospect identification, engagement, and successful solicitations. - Development of U‑M Strategy and Prospects in Region (10%):
Collaborate with our Senior Director of Major Gifts, Midwestern States to plan the major and planned gift solicitation process. Develop a strategic engagement pipeline and events plan for the region. - Volunteer Management (5%):
Recruit and sustain a volunteer network and committee structure in the region to multiply prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation. - Other Responsibilities:

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience.
- 5+ years of development experience in major gifts or related fields.
- Sound knowledge of laws, practices, and philosophy of charitable giving.
- Experience with financial development or sales productivity.
- Experience working with and/or managing volunteers in a professional capacity.
