Job Description

Senior Project Manager – This is a full-time, term-limited role expected to last through one year. The extension, if any, depends on program needs, funding and performance. The American Red Cross may terminate employment at any time, for any legal reason, with or without cause or notice.

The Senior Project Manager supports the Humanitarian Services (HS) Project Management Office (PMO) and manages complex, medium-sized projects with moderate resource requirements and risk. The role guides project teams and senior leadership through all phases from concept to closeout. Under minimal guidance, the Senior Project Manager ensures that the project plan, scope, WBS, schedule, risk, budget and deliverables align with the project goals as defined by the statement of work.

Provides support, development and leadership guidance to volunteers. Performs duties in compliance with standard operating procedures and applicable regulations.

This position reports to the Director, Strategic Planning, and operates in a matrixed environment with other project managers and volunteers. The work location is 100% virtual/home-based and, while the position can be worked from anywhere in the United States, occasional flexibility is required to meet east-coast schedules.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee project team milestones and performance against project plan, scope, budget, resources and schedule. Proactively manage risks, issues and dependencies.
  • Communicate project progress to senior sponsors, stakeholders and field as appropriate.
  • Facilitate executive steering committees and status updates.
  • Develop and prepare written project plans for complex projects, detailing tasks, roles and responsibilities, risk, resources, budget and communications.
  • Develop work breakdown structures and perform critical path analysis.
  • Manage change control within the project, obtaining sponsor approval for changes to scope, budget and schedule that affect the critical path.
  • Obtain a project charter from senior management and sign off on the statement of work by the sponsor.
  • Ensure scope, budget and schedule targets are within variance and the delivery date is met.
  • Navigate ambiguity across departments to bring people together for project success.
  • Coach project team on PM methodologies, templates and tools.
HS PMO Responsibilities
  • Support portfolio-level planning and resource allocation.
  • Provide input into business case development and prioritization.
  • Help define and implement PMO processes, templates and tools; contribute to governance frameworks.
  • Promote project management best practices throughout Humanitarian Services.
  • Collaborate within the HS PMO to define project dependencies, lessons learned library and cross-project risk monitoring.
Scope and Qualifications

Scope:
Individual contributor with comprehensive knowledge in a specific area. Ability to execute highly complex or specialized projects. May depart from precedent to develop solutions.

Required Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Professional Certification: PMP (Project Management Professional) certification required.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
