Senior Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Manager

Tier 1 Construction Contractor

Gateshead

Hybrid – site based with flexibility to work from home 1–2 days per week

80k - £85k base + car

The Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Manager to support construction projects across the North East region. The role is regionally focused, providing expert SHE leadership, assurance, and continuous improvement across multiple live sites.

This position would suit a candidate based in Darlington, Middlesbrough, or Stockton-on-Tees, enabling effective regional coverage.

As Senior SHE Manager, you will be accountable for the successful delivery of safety, health, and low-risk environmental management across the region, providing clear feedback on performance and ensuring compliance with legal requirements and company policies—particularly in relation to high-risk construction activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor, advise, support, enforce, and report on health, safety, and environmental standards across multiple construction projects
  • Ensure project teams are fully equipped to identify, manage, and mitigate SHE risks and opportunities
  • Conduct audits, inspections, site visits, and investigations to ensure compliance with legislation and internal policies
  • Analyse SHE performance data and provide insight to drive continuous improvement at regional level
  • Collaborate with internal teams (including pre-construction) and external stakeholders, including supply chain partners, to promote best practice and a proactive safety culture
  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and service strikes, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
  • Deliver health, safety, and environmental training to project teams and supply chain partners
  • Support accreditations and audit submissions, including BSI audits at group and operational level
  • Support supply chain partner selection and onboarding from PQQ stage through to site mobilisation
  • Contribute to bids and tenders by addressing client health, safety, and environmental requirements
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Level 5 qualification in Occupational Safety & Health
  • TechIOSH membership
  • Relevant SHE certifications (e.g. IEMA, SEATS, SMSTS)
  • Valid CSCS card and full UK driving licence
  • In-depth health, safety, and environmental experience within the construction industry
Desirable Skills and Attributes
  • Proven experience managing SHE management systems, audits, and performance improvement
  • Strong communication, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to translate complex SHE requirements into practical guidance for diverse audiences
  • Self-motivated, resilient, and confident in holding teams to account
  • CertIOSH membership
