Our claims litigation management department is currently seeking a Director Panel Counsel to join our growing team .We offer a flexible hybrid work model that supports a blend of in‑office and remote work. Fully remote work arrangements are also considered. This is a Full Time/Exempt role.

Position Overview

This Director role provides managerial oversight of Hanover’s Panel Counsel Program, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and supporting the VP of Claims Panel Management. The position emphasizes execution, compliance, and team leadership, including mentoring Strategic Panel Counsel Managers and other team members. Key responsibilities include tactical oversight at an operational level, relationship management with panel firms, driving operational excellence, and leading process improvement initiatives.

Strategic

Oversight
  • Support implementation of panel counsel strategies established by the VP of Claims Panel Management.
  • Ensure panel composition aligns with business and geographic needs through regular review and recommendations.
  • Monitor adherence to litigation guidelines and elevate compliance issues as appropriate.
  • Provide input on rate adjustments and panel standards within established frameworks.
Relationship Management
  • Responsible for overseeing enterprise‑level panel firm relationships.
  • Serve as a key liaison to panel firms, ensuring consistent communication and expectations.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholder to support effective litigation strategies.
  • Facilitate regular performance discussions and feedback sessions with panel firms.
  • Assist in resolving escalated issues related to firm performance or compliance.
Data & Analytics
  • Provide leadership in leveraging data and analytics to inform decisions and improve panel performance.
  • Oversee development and use of dashboards and reporting tools for firm performance, cost control, and compliance.
  • Ensure data integrity and accuracy across systems, guide enhancements to analytics processes.
  • Translate insights into actionable recommendations for leadership and team members.
Operational Excellence
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations of Panel Counsel Management, ensuring timely execution of tasks and compliance with guidelines.
  • Monitor performance metrics and reporting tools to identify trends and areas for improvement. Ensure accurate onboarding of firms into systems such as e‑billing and matter management.
  • Collaborate with team members to maintain data integrity and operational consistency.
Process Improvement
  • Lead initiatives to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency within panel counsel operations.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and technology enhancements to improve outcomes.
  • Encourage continuous improvement through feedback loops and best practice sharing.
  • Mentor team members on adopting new processes and tools effectively.
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Strategic Panel Counsel Managers and other team members.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment focused on professional growth.
  • Mentor peers and serve as a subject matter expert on panel counsel operations, legal quality, and strategic engagement.
Required Skills, Key Competencies, and Experience
  • 10+ years related experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • JD required; 5–7+ years handling or overseeing litigated matters.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a team.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Ability to balance tactical execution with broader organizational priorities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
  • Strong understanding of insurance claims litigation and related processes.
  • Skilled in negotiation and conflict resolution, with the ability to influence without compromising relationships.
  • Ability to remain calm and solution‑focused in high‑stakes or opposing‑viewpoint discussions.
