PositionSummary
The LIRC staff attorney position assists the three LIRC Commissioners in providing fair and impartial review of the employment law decisions of administrative law judges in cases involving Unemployment Insurance (UI), Worker’s Compensation (WC), and Equal Rights (ER). The staff attorney performs review of cases petitioned to the Commission for review. The staff attorney is responsible for providing analysis, verification of evidence, making recommendations to the Commission, and drafting decisions for consideration by the Commission.
The staff attorney may also represent the Commission in court in matters involving unemployment insurance. Strong written communication skills will be vital to success in this position.

Salary InformationThis classification is assigned to pay schedule/range 09-75 with an annual starting salary between $93,600 and $120,785 per year depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probation may be required.
Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.
Job DetailsDue to the nature of the position, LIRC will conduct background checks on applicants prior to selection. LIRC does not sponsor work visas. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States, and to complete the required employment eligibility form.
All employees are expected to live and work in Wisconsin. Partial telecommuting (up to a maximum of 4 days per week) may be available upon completion of the probationary period, subject to operational needs and organizational requirements. QualificationsA minimally qualified applicant will have graduated from an accredited law school and will be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin upon hire.

Minimally qualified applicants will have education or training in each of the following activities:
- Researching, analyzing, and interpreting law;
- Providing legal advice, counsel, and recommendations;
- Preparing legal documents or memoranda (e.g., pleadings, briefs, legal opinions, administrative rules, orders, etc.).
In addition, well-qualified applicants will have experience in one or more of the following:
- Drafting legal decisions involving findings of fact and conclusions of law;
- Applying and interpreting Wisconsin law relating to unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation, and/or equal opportunity (fair employment, public accommodations, etc.);
- Preparing documents for litigation (briefs, motions, answers) and providing legal representation.
