Join our dynamic in-house legal team as a Staff or Senior Staff – Workers’ Compensation Attorney, where your expertise will help shape outcomes for our clients and insureds across California.
Responsibilities- Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive research, and develop well-reasoned legal strategies.
- Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients, preparing complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, petitions for reconsideration, and trial briefs with a high degree of autonomy.
- Collaborate with Claims Partners to achieve optimal outcomes for Hartford insureds.
- Provide timely and effective communication, legal advice, and support to clients, maintaining professional diplomacy with courts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel.
- Facilitate prompt and efficient resolution of cases; independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence in trials, hearings, arbitrations, and ADR proceedings.
- Research, draft, file, and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts.
- Participate in team huddles, conduct in-house training for junior associates and claims partners, and engage in claims file reviews.
- Regularly attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain professional expertise.

Experience:
Manage your own caseload and participate in depositions and hearings before the Workers’ Compensation Boards across California (e.g., Van Nuys, Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oxnard). - Growth-Oriented Culture:

Note:
This position may be filled as a Staff Attorney or a Senior Staff Attorney commensurate with experience.
- Minimum 2 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers’ Compensation cases.
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and license to practice in California.
- Trial experience preferred.
- Positive, collaborative team-player attitude.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Lexis Nexis experience a plus.
- Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Strong computer skills and ability to quickly leverage new software as required.
- Minimum 5 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers’ Compensation cases (including life/pension aspects).
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and license to practice in California.
- Trial experience preferred.
- Positive, collaborative team-player attitude.
- Excellent legal research and writing skills.
- Strong MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Lexis Nexis experience a plus.

This position is a remote work opportunity. The WCAB is virtual and requires in-person appearances for expedited hearings and trials. Travel within the following geography may be required:
Los Angeles, Long Beach, Marina Del Rey, Van Nuys and Oxnard, California. Flexible work arrangements and a business casual environment are offered.
The listed annualized base pay range is based on external market analysis. Actual base pay may vary based on performance, proficiency, and demonstrated competencies. The base pay is one component of Hartford’s total compensation package, which may include bonuses and incentives. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $118,000 - $198,600.
The posted salary range reflects the company’s ability to hire at different titles and levels depending on background and experience.
