Overview

What You’ll Do The Ohio Attorney General's Office is seeking a Crime Scene Technician in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Crime Scene Unit. This position will primarily be designated for remote working, with potential in-person requirements for training and operational needs. The headquarters location is London, OH. BCI houses the state’s official crime lab and identification services serving all of Ohio, and provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request.

BCI operates across the state and stands ready to respond 24/7 to law enforcement needs.

Responsibilities
  • Distinguish the full range of the color spectrum to visually and physically examine and investigate crime scenes and preserve physical evidence (e.g., latent fingerprints, shoe prints, tire tracks, body fluids, hair, fibers, weapons) in varying environments.
  • Communicate with diverse groups via two-way radio, MDC, and phone, often under stressful circumstances.
  • Interact tactfully with coworkers and the public, demonstrating mutual respect for people at all levels.
  • Answer inquiries over the phone and in person regarding policies, procedures, and assignment-related questions.
  • Conduct area searches on foot or in a vehicle.
  • Recover, unload, and impound firearms and other weapons using sound safety precautions.
  • Recover, transport, and impound various types of evidence, including human remains when applicable.
  • Measure and perform advanced mathematical calculations; diagram complex crime scenes.
  • Prepare and use presumptive tests, chemicals, powders, and casting materials; preserve techniques as required in a forensic context.
  • Photograph crime scenes and evidence, including postmortem examinations.
  • Use specialized equipment to determine the presence of body fluids and collect trace evidence (e.g., body fluids, hair, fibers, gunshot residue).
  • Dust and lift fingerprints; cast shoe impressions and other evidence as required.
  • Conduct interviews to obtain information for crime scene investigations as needed.
  • Enter detailed information into a computerized report-writing program with proper grammar and punctuation after compiling necessary information.
  • Travel to crime scenes in a state-issued vehicle from a residential office or other agreed location.
  • May be required to testify in court regarding scenes processed and evidence collected.
  • May provide specialized field training and/or crime scene preservation training to police officers and citizens.
  • May render opinions and draw conclusions in subdisciplines such as footwear comparisons, bloodstain pattern interpretation, and bullet trajectory paths.
  • Complete and pass annual proficiency testing and competency testing as required.
  • Required to carry a firearm.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in forensic science or a related field; 2 years of experience in crime scene investigation; valid driver’s license. Or equivalent to the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
